Grades

Official Transcript | Extension Request Form | Incomplete Request Form | Drop/Withdrawal Request Form

Upon completion of a course, including the final examination, an unofficial final grade report will be sent to the student by the Center for Distance Education. The final grade will be recorded in the UAF Admissions and Records Office. Official transcripts must be requested from that office. No transcript will be provided if the student has any UAF fees outstanding.

You can also view your final grade using UA Online, as well as request transcripts, print an unofficial transcript, and perform many other tasks.

If a student has not completed the course within the one-year time period and has not requested an extension, the instructor may give a grade based on the work completed (could be an "F"), or an "NB" for No Basis meaning there is insufficient student progress and/or attendance for evaluation to occur. No credit is given, nor is “NB? calculated in the GPA. This is a permanent grade and may not be used to substitute for the Incomplete (I). It can't be removed by later completing outstanding work.).

Semester-Based Grades

A University of Alaska student who has enrolled in Independent Learning courses as part of his or her full-time load must complete the course in the semester of enrollment. Grading will follow the procedures for all other semester-based courses. If the course is not completed, he or she may request a grade of "I," or Incomplete, from the instructor. If granted the student may have up to one more year (or less because the time frame will be determined by the instructor) to finish the course, change the "I" to a letter grade, and receive credit. If the course is not completed by the end of that time the instructor may assign a grade based on the work completed or will automatically be changed to an "F."

In some circumstances your instructor may elect to assign a No Basis (“NB") registration status. NB registration status means that there is no basis for assigning a grade and the student did not initiate withdrawal paperwork. Instructors may award an “NB" if there is insufficient student progress and/or attendance for evaluation to occur. No credit is given, nor is the “NB" calculated in the GPA. It cannot be removed by later completing the outstanding work.

Processing Your Grade

Allow at least one month between completion of the final examination and the recording of the course grade, especially when great demands are placed on the Admissions and Records office–the end of each semester in December, May, and August.

Students with specific deadlines, such as graduation or certificate renewal should keep these time constraints in mind when enrolling for courses. To expedite enrollment and lesson processing, notify the CDE and the course instructor that such deadline exists. The CDE staff will try to accommodate individual student needs within accepted policies and procedures.

Failure to Complete

If a student does not finish a semester-based course, financial aid for the next semester could be negatively impacted, depending on the individual situation. Financial aid requirements should be considered before a student decides not to complete a course. Failure to complete a semester-based IL course may adversely affect grade point average, future enrollment, and academic probation.

Withdrawal

Semester-based courses cannot be changed into regular year-long courses. If you wish to withdraw from the course, you must do so by the same deadline as all other semester courses.

Grades

All policies and procedures that apply to regular semester courses will apply to semester-based Independent Learning courses. Grades for these courses will factor into both the semester and cumulative GPA.
