Exams
Letter for Proctor | Exam Request FormMost Independent Learning courses require that the student complete proctored examinations, one of which is the final examination. Fairbanks area students may take their exams at the CDE office, for which scheduling one day in advance is advisable. For those outside the Fairbanks area, or those who can not schedule the exam during business hours, Examination Request Forms are included in each course guide or found within their online course.
If you need a Proctor
Examinations (or examination passwords) are sent only to designated proctors who are willing to supervise the student and to certify the examination's proper completion. Before requesting your examination, you must select an approved testing site (a local educational institution like a public school or university branch campus or a library would be preferred) and arrange an appointment with an eligible individual to proctor the examination. Proctors must be education officials at a university, community college or public school site, other governmental or community officials, or, if such persons are unavailable, other people approved in advance by the Director. Relatives and/or friends cannot be proctors.
Scheduling the Exam
Students must submit identification documents to the examination proctor. Examinations will be mailed to the proctor in sealed envelopes with instructions for supervising the exam process. To insure security, exams cannot be faxed.
Schedule the exam far enough in advance to allow for receipt of all lessons preceding the exam and the mailing of the test itself, but keep in mind that all lessons/projects and exams preceding this exam should be turned into CDE prior to taking this examination. Two weeks should be allowed between the date of mailing the exam request and the requested examination date.
An on-line exam request is also available. It is important to indicate which exam is being requested as most courses have more than one exam.
Students in Independent Learning courses are subject to the same regulations regarding honesty in their work assignments and exams as are resident students of the University of Alaska. Please note that students must ordinarily receive a passing grade on their final exam in order to obtain credit for the course.
Exam Grades
Grades for examinations will be mailed back to the student just like any other lesson. Depending on the course and the instructor, corrected examinations may be returned to students residing outside Fairbanks for review and further study. Fairbanks students may review their corrected examinations at the CDE office, according to the policies of the instructor.
