Preparing Your System for Elluminate Conferencing

1. Verify System Requirements

In addition to the Java web start software discussed below, your system must meet the following technical specifications:

PC/Windows:

  • Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP
  • Pentium II 266 MHz processor or faster
  • 64 MB of RAM
  • 20 MB of available disk space on your hard drive
  • Soundcard with speakers and microphone or headset
  • 28.8 kbps or higher Internet connection

For a MAC:

  • Mac OS 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, Mac OS X 10.1 or later
  • G3 233 MHz or better
  • 64 megabytes for OS 9, and; 128 megabytes for OS X and above
  • 20 megabytes of available disk space on your hard drive
  • Stuffit Expander
  • Soundcard with speakers and microphone or headset
  • 28.8 kbps or higher Internet connection

2. Check Your Connection Speed

Use the bandwidth meter to check your connection speed (you only need to fill in #1 and #2 on the form).

To use Elluminate! a 28.8k connection speed is required.

3. Set Up Your Headphones/Microphone

If you need help setting up your headphones and microphone, you can view complete instructions.

4. Install Java Web Start

Elluminate uses the Java Web Start package. You can use the Elluminate Support page to install this package (if needed) and test your configuration.

Proceed to the Elluminate Support page. Underneath the "Support" title you should see a box. If it looks like this:

you can jump ahead to Step 5. However, if it looks like this:

You will need to follow the rest of the instructions in this step.

a. Use the button in the box above to "Download and Install the Required Software":

b. Select your platform from the drop-down menu (in the example we are using Windows XP):

c. Click the "Get Software" Button to begin downloading the Java Web Start installer:

d. When asked, choose to "Open" the file:

e. When the installer has finished downloading and begins to run you will see a dialog like this:

Don't cancel this dialog! Although it might not seem like anything is happening, this is when the necessary software is being installed and-- as the dialog indicates-- it can take anywhere from 2-20 minutes! When the installation is finished, the dialog box above will automatically close.

5. Use the Elluminate Configuration Room

a. Go to Elluminate Support page. You should now see a box under the "Support" banner that looks like this:

b. You will now want to use the automated configuration room to install the classroom software and access a test classroom. Point your browser to:
http://elive.dist-ed.uaf.edu:8080/meeting_login.html?meeting_id=6953

c. Enter your name in the form provided:

d. If asked, choose to "Open" the file provided:

e. You will now receive a dialog as the Elluminate software is activated:

The first time you activate Elluminate it will download the Elluminate software which will take a few minutes!

f. When you see the "Security Warning" you must click the "Start" button:

g. Elluminate will load the required modules, informing you as it does so:

h. Finally it will connect you to the classroom (this is called "Authenticating") and you should eventually see two green checkmarks:

i. When you see the class interface, as shown below, you will know that you have successfully installed the Elluminate software and can follow the instructions automatically provided to adjust your headphones and microphone:
