Yearlong or Semester-Based?

What are the differences between yearlong and semester based courses? Regular Independent Learning (IL) courses are year-based. You may register at any time, and you have up to twelve months from the day you enroll to complete the course. They do not count in your current course load at UAF, but do count toward cumulative grade point average for purposes of graduation. You can register for yearlong IL courses directly through this site. If you're using financial aid, you'll want to register for your IL course on a semester basis.

See our more detailed comparison chart for more information.

Semester-based IL courses count toward full-time status and financial aid. You must enroll for semester-based IL courses during the normal semester registration or preregistration period. You will enroll through your local campus or register at UA online. Grades for these courses will factor into both the semester and cumulative GPA. If you fail to complete a semester-based IL course by the stated semester deadline, your grade point average, future enrollment, and academic probation may be affected.
